Hawtree, Rounds 1 and 2

Posted in Hawtree

The Richmond Park team met Portsmouth in Round 1 of this mixed greensomes competition and had a narrow win by 3 points (156 vs 153).

In Round 2 we played against Hoebridge and had another win, this time by 5 points (159 vs 154). Our ‘away’ team of Sheena Harrington & Paul Green and Caroline Stilwell & Mel Dunn scored a very creditable 77 points (to Hoebridge’s 79); at home, on the Duke’s course, our team of Cheryl Woodhouse & Richard Owen and Joe Gonclaves & Joan Mulcahy scored 82 points (to Hoebridge’s 75). The matches were played in a very competative but friendly spirit on a gloriously warm day.

Kelso Hamilton Quarter Final

Posted in Kelso Hamilton

Richmond Park B (Adrian Wells and Julian James) were beaten 2 up by Reigate Heath on the Prince’s course. The Reigate Heath team went up early then we came back and were two up and looking good, however then they worked to three up. By the 18th tee we’d got them back down to 1 up, but they had the better final hole. Good match played in good spirit.

Midweek May Plate

Posted in Competitions

A blustery day but pleasantly warm in the sunshine.
Richard Norden Had a very steady round of 5 pars 1 birdie on hole 18 and 1 double bogey on 16 and the rest bogies to amass 42 points. I’m sure that WHS will enjoy his score accordingly!! Lia Donarth was second on 40 points with her 6 pars and 18 out and 22 back. Peppe Monterosso was 3rd on countback 17 out and 21 back from Cheryl Woodhouise 18 out 20 back both having 38 Points. Giles Rawlinson raced around the front 9 with 23 points but found the back 9 less to his liking with 14 back 37 points total.
Overall the scoring was good with 29 players scoring 30+ points.

NAPGC Ballantyne pairs matchplay

Following a bye in Round 1, the Richmond Park team played South Bucks (The South Buckinghamshire) on the Prince’s course, on a breezy and occasionally showery Bank Holiday Monday.  The result was a 2:1 win for Richmond Park, who will now play Tilgate Forest B in Round 3.

Our first pair (Paul Green and Richard Owen) started with a birdie win on the first hole but then exchanged holes and it was all square after the 10th.  Richard then birdied the 11th and won the 12, making it 2up and the match was closed out by Paul on the 16th, for a 3&2 win.

Our second pair (Justin Wildman and Mel Dunn) were up against stiff opposition playing well (and had to give shots), losing on the 14th hole, 5&4.

Our third pair (Russell Stewart  and Adrian Wells) gradually piled the pressure on their opponents during the front 9, being 5up at the turn.  They then went on to be 6up after 11 holes and closed their match out 5&4 on the 14th.  Our star player was Russell, who had a fantastic day on the greens.

The games were played in a competitive but convivial atmosphere and the teams enjoyed drinks and pizza together on the veranda after play.

Spring Bank Holiday Plate/Committee Cup Rd2

Posted in Competitions

Women

A strange day weather-wise but it did keep dry and when the sun was out it was pretty warm, but that swirly, gusty wind did its best to make things challenging. 3 of those playing today aren’t shown in the attached results but it was one of the best turn-outs this year despite it being a bank holiday.

Last week’s top 2 were in the same game and if it had only been 9 holes today Reiko would have caught and overtaken Sheena and was the only one to play better on the front 9 with 20 points. Sadly as Sheena’s game resurrected itself hers sadly went the other way and Sheena amassed 23 points on the back 9 dropping just 3 shots to par.

Men

A windy but dry day for the (2nd) May Bank Holiday Plate; the courses had benefited from some rain during the week. The field was diminished due the Bank Holiday/ a number playing their KO matches.

Some excellent scoring on the back 9 (22 points) saw Rannesh Jansari 40 points the deserved winner on countback from Giovanni Caboni (20 out and back) .Toby Hunt held 3rd spot on his own with a skilfully crafted 39 points. 3 splendid 38s from Peter Abbott, Brian McMahon and Tom O’Hare followed with Peter heading with countback of 21 points on back 9.

Founders Cup – J. Hume (3 of 6)

Posted in Competitions

A day which started with a light shower, brightened up then ended with very heavy rain and hail as the final group were approaching the 17th Green!! It stopped as we got near the 18th Green. The rest of the field got in OK.
Scoring was overall very good and Henry Lindesay-Bethune just beat Adrian Wells on countaback, both scoring 41 points. Henry had the best gross score 75 against a par of71, Adrian would have pipped Henry but for blob on hole 14 index 1 hole. Dave Cato continued his recent good form with 39 points on countback from Richard Owen and Mike Assender who also scored 39 points.
Well done to the three players who scored 2’s.

Men’s Summer Cup & UKPCC Qualifier & Women’s Committee Cup – Rd 1

Posted in Competitions

Women

Some good scoring out there today and interesting to note how many had better back 9s, the supposedly more difficult half or certainly the longer 9. But then again there was a lot of run on the ball, sometimes in crazy directions of course and the new depth of sand presented its own challenges in the bunkers.

Sadly for those at the top it means nothing until next week is done & dusted and whilst the groupings in the lower 30s might feel dispirited we all know how quickly things can change & good to see that almost everyone is playing next week.

No one entered the UKPCC qualifier.

Men

A slightly chilly start to the Summer Cup & UKPCC qualifier. A number found the course difficult to score on especially being off the white tees.
But Adrian Wells recorded a superlative round of 41 points 21 out, 20 back; Mel Dunn recorded 22 points going out in his excellent 40, Naveed Manazir and Peter Needham shared 39 points and in form Hawtree pairs high scorer Paul Green claimed front 9 of 23 points.

Midweek May Medal (Midweek GM Rd 3 of 8)

Posted in Competitions

The good weather continues and the bounce of the ball is unpredictable at times. However, many scores were very good. 50 players battled around the course and most had a good time.
Richard Smith recorded the best gross score and won Division 1 by 3 shots. It took countback to decide who would be second and Mike Assender just pipped Julian James with Mike Horsthuis in 4th place.
In Division 2 Dave Cato continued his rich vein of form with his net 65. It included a birdie on the par 3 13th!!
2 shots back was Bill Norman with David Grace just edging Adrian Wells into 3rd place and also on net 68 was Chris Jones.

Women’s May Monthly Medal & May Monthly Medal [GMT Rd 3 of 8] & NAPGC Championship Qualifier

Posted in Competitions

Women

Elisabeth is continuing her downward trend in terms of handicapping and can expect another cut tomorrow having played to an adjusted gross of 33.4 today………. Congratulations on the win today by 4 shots from Lia in second place.
With 4 women on duty for a Hawtree match the numbers playing were low for a summer month.

Men

Another sunny dry day with plenty of ball run for the May medal. Greens fast

In the senior division it was a day for the ‘Richards’ – Richard Owen returning a superb 60 dropping just 5 shots and with 3 birdies. Lowest gross =well done indeed. Richard Smith started with a 7 but improved all the way sharing back 9 honours of 35 with Richard Owen. Third came Richard Back with net 67 and front 9 honours of just 1 over par 36.

The junior division was headed by Cuneyt Sazer with a consistent 67 -42 gross in and out. Alex Catlow followed with 68 = back 9  nine shots less than front 9. Robin Thomas took 2nd on 69 – would have been better but for 8 and 7 on back 9.

9 players birdied the par 5 9th.

This was 3rd (of possible 8) round of the Grand Medal; in senior division Julia James leads 218 from Oz Doyle whilst in junior Gerard Ouattara leads 216 from Alex Catlow 224.

Surrey Fives Round 3

Posted in Surrey Fives

Reigate Hill came to Richmond Park and played a close match against us, unfortunately beating us 3:2. The match was played in a good spirit.
